Carbonless Paper Saves Space – Not to Mention the Planet!

Carbonless copy paper is growing increasingly more popular with both big and small business because it’s relatively cheap, extremely simple to use, and generates high quality duplicates. Further, the carbonless paper is considered more”environmentally friendly” since a carbon sheet is not lost after each copy.

Consider a medium sized firm producing 1000’s of bills, purchase orders, work orders (you get the idea) per month, each time using carbon forms in which the’carbon’ sheet is discarded or simply left connected, not to be used . Together with Carbonless paper, there is no’carbon’ sheet – thereby decreasing waste by an unprecedented 50% – not to mention space if these papers and forms are archived. The technology supporting this paper is somewhat simple. But because of the increasing popularity and following demand for carbonless paper products, many companies are currently maintaining their own tweaks and methods as trade secrets. Originally employed for manual copy, carbonless forms have moved to advanced printing where the paper can be used with common inkjet and laserjet printers.

The back of the top page is coated with micro-encapsulated dye. The front of the bottom page is coated in clay that is reactive. When pressure is put on the top page the micro-capsules of dye split, releasing the dye that then reacts with the clay, making a permanent mark. The capsules of dye are so small (hence the title micro-encapsulation) the mark printed is very exact. Therefore the switch from carbon based forms to carbonless forms does not impact the quality of the duplicate.

Generally, carbonless paper is truly favored for its precision (giving you buy it from an excellent carbonless dealer). To get a 3-part type, the micro-encapsulated dye is coated on the back of the top sheet. The front of the middle or’sandwich’ sheet is coated on either side: the front with reactive clay and the rear using micro-encapsulated dye. The base sheet is front- coated with responsive clay. Printing on the top sheet provides duplicates on the subsequent two sheets. With 2-part, 3-part and 4-part forms (etc ), there is no coating on the front of the top page or the rear of the bottom page.

Carbonless paper has progressed significantly since its actual invention by chemists in the NCR Corporation. Early posts on this sort of paper referred to it as No Carbon Required newspaper, or NCR paper, utilizing the Corporation’s acronym. The title NCR Paper has never faded and is used frequently today.

Although demand for carbonless paper is rising, don’t expect prices to scale – on the contrary.
